This Grand Ledge retaining wall was constructed as an extension of a previously built stone wall. The backyard’s significant slope is now stabilized by the wall, creating additional usable space on both sides. The Rosetta stone adds a distinctive touch, serving as both a functional element and a standout landscape feature.
Before the installation of the new retaining wall, the yard had a steep slope toward the side of the house, which limited the usability and functionality of the space. The trench for the Grand Ledge retaining wall base is carefully excavated and lined with geotextile fabric prior to stone installation, ensuring a strong and stable foundation.Drainage pipes are installed along the trench beneath the retaining wall to direct rainwater away from the structure, helping protect the wall and extend its lifespan. The stones are now being installed. Due to their size and weight, heavy machinery such as excavators is used alongside specialized saws to ensure each piece is placed and stacked with precision.Small gravel is placed behind the wall to help retain the hillside and support the weight of the retaining wall stones. This added reinforcement is essential to the overall stability and longevity of the structure.Once all the stones are set, final grading is completed to level the surrounding area and create a seamless, natural landscape that enhances the backyard space. The new Grand Ledge retaining wall is integrated into the backyard slope, creating more usable level space while improving the overall appearance of the landscape.
